Isola dei Topi (Mouse Island), is situated in the Piombino Channel, around three hundred metres north of Capo Castello, near Cavo; despite its name there are no mice on the island – all that lives here is a Mediterranean plant, the Calicotome villosa. Until 1871 there were records of a population of monk seals on the island. By sea, it is within easy reach of Cavo harbour or Frugoso beach. Although the island is privately owned, visitors are allowed on land.
